 Laura Little
Clinical Therapist

Hello Nursing Students, Faculty and Staff,

My name is Laura Little, and I am the part-time Clinical Therapist for the Faculty of Nursing.

Here’s some things to know:

  • My office is Toldo 201-A

  • I am available for appointments with nursing students on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays

  • My office hours are 8:30-4:30

  • Service is completely confidential - all therapists and administrative staff employed by the Student Counselling Centre are subject to strict confidentiality through their professional regulation and must protect all personal health information under PHIPA.

  • There is no additional cost for accessing services with me.

  • Attending therapy is always your choice, and provided with your informed consent

  • I am committed to creating a welcoming, supportive space.  For those whose experiences of marginalization and oppression that may add extra layers to your distress – you and all your identities are welcome here.

I'm here to help if you need:

  • Many students find counselling a helpful way to deal with difficult situations and feelings. Whether you are experiencing a situational problem, an immediate crisis, or have a longstanding mental health concern, I am here to help.

  • Mental health support includes more than one-on-one counselling. Groups and workshops are powerful tools for growth and change. Many students participate in our groups each semester. Whether you want to overcome challenges, improve relationships, connect with others, or learn how to manage stress, anxiety or depression, there is a place for you. I can help refer you to services that make sense for you, whatever your situation.

  • Faculty and staff can consult with me to support students they are concerned about (*I will never confirm or deny a student’s attendance at counselling unless given consent by the student to do so).

About me:

I am a Registered Clinical Social Worker, with 17 years of experience focusing on adult mental health. I have extensive experience providing therapy to individuals, groups, and communities including working for 4 years with a psychiatric hospital medical team in London UK; providing therapy to individuals and groups with Family Service Ontario; extensive work with survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence, and most recently as the Clinical Therapist at the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law, supporting students’ success and wellbeing throughout their program.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and strengths based, supporting students to identify and utilize their resources and encouraging deeper self-compassion, self-awareness, and understanding of personal values to move toward their goals. I use a person-in-environment perspective, taking full consideration of individuals’ unique identities and experiences, and work intentionally toward creating a safe space for all students. I am 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming, trauma-informed and work to practice cultural safety and humility. I draw from an eclectic base of therapy modalities, including Person-Centred Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) as well as mindfulness-based interventions.

To book an appointment:

Confidential appointments are made by emailing the Student Counselling Services office administrator Melanie at scc@uwindsor.ca and asking to make an appointment with Laura.

Please note that the Student Counselling Centre is not staffed or designed as a crisis care setting. However, our staff make every effort to be available to help a student in crisis or direct them to appropriate emergency services. When students require mental health services that are beyond the scope of practice of SCC, we provide appropriate referrals to campus, community, or other resources.

If you are concerned about your own or another person's safety, including if you are experiencing thoughts of suicide without a clear commitment to safety, please IMMEDIATELY contact one of the following:

  • Crisis Services Canada 1-833-456-4566

  • Windsor Community Crisis Centre 519-973-4435

  • Dial 9-1-1 or go to your nearest Hospital Emergency Room

Take good care,

Laura
